I'm having a problem with my external broadband cable modem.
The USB light keeps going out and I get cut off. If I restart the computer it comes on again until the next time - can anyone help?

Need a little bit more information than that to be of any help. For example; what O/S are you running? What are the specs of your PC? What make of modem is it? What does the green light signify, power or connection? Does it happen at regular intervals? And so on.
The more information you can provide, the easier it should be to isolate the cause. :)

I had a similar problem when I upgraded to xp pro, despite updating everything we could think of, every time we turned the pc on, it failed to recognise our external modem and each time we had to reinstall, so we're back to win 98. (which I prefer anyhoooo)
I expect you've tried to reinstall it.
Have you recently installed anything that may have caused the prob?

in my opinion the first thing I would suggest is having you plug it into another USB port. It's possible you could have a faulty port. Let us know.

OK it gets worse, ive realised that its not only the modem that goes off but the printer (which is plugged in the same area) goes off too. All my parts are bang up to date except for the motherboard which is a bit old - could it be this?
Ive got four USB ports and ive tried them all to no avail and the cut outs are completely random.

if uve got a via mobo, do u have the 4 in1 drivers?

The 4 in 1 drivers made my computer crash everytime I tried to do anything and my network card is old and crap so I'll get a new one and see if that works.

Yeah, good call B... the 4-in-1's have to be installed to properly detect the motherboard and its components. The 4-in-1's have a USB filter driver and they force the USB controller to be detected by the OS.
Seeing as how you have a printer port thats also loosing connection, I'd say check in device manager and make sure all your pieces and parts are detected correctly (listed by brand name and NOT generic MS drivers). Disabling power saving features under control panel could solve the printer thing, especially if its a HP printer.

Well I got a new network card and plugged the modem into the ethernet slot instead and everything seems to be working fine now :) Thanks for all the help.
