View Full Version : Windows 2000 Server/Linux Mandrake 9.0 Dual Boot

I got a spare PC which serves as my learning computer if you will. It has the following specs:

P2
45 mhz processor
256 MB RAM
25gig HD

anyway, we are working heavily with 2K server at school and I'd like to install it on my PC here. I have done that before, but never with a dual boot. I want also to work on my Linux skills a bit and I have always liked Mandrake. (Yes, I know they are filing for Chapter 11).

Anyway, Im curious on what everyone's thoughts were? I just formatted the hard drives on the computer and planned on installing Mandrake first, once I am done downloading version 9. Would you suggest me starting with Mandrake first or going with Server first?

mandrake. Its a bit easier to partition hardrives to save space for your 2k install. 2k will just fill up the harddrive and you'll have to use something like partition magic to resize it. Or mandrake may do that too, i've never installed it.

ok thats what I figured Null. Tell me something man, I am downloading Mandrake right now. Will just the first CD be enough? arent the others just for extras?

I agree with Null, put the Linux on first cuz its not 'all-controlling' like windoze is :)
If you use a boot manager program for yer dual booting then Windoze install might detect it and suggest you quit install (happened to me) so pay attention to your "ok's" and "cancels" when installing 2000.

hmm its been awhile since I installed Linux. Doesnt the install disk have a boot sequence on the CD?

well i had a corrupt cd for Mandrake so Im going with Lycoris linux which I had on CD already. Here's for hoping the best. Can I update it to the newest version once it's installed?

quick question for the linux experts here. what in ways of security (firewall) and anti-virus can be used for Lycoris Linux? I have a router, but since router's don't control outgoing situations should I be looking for a software firewall also? lastly, recommend me an atni-virus that will work with Lycoris Linux also and a good one for 2K Server in the process. :)

there is no such thing as a virus for linux, at least not that the average user should be concerned with.

Firewall support is already built into the kernel(ipchains) so its just a matter of the program you use to configure it. I'm sure Lycoris comes with a firewall configuration utility

ok thx Null I appreciate the information. I should have known that about virus' with Linux. Ill look to see what kind of configuration utility it has for a firewall once I am done updating it. :)

alright total newb question. i got lycoris installed, but how the heck do I get server installed now? its not recognizing my second hard drive and I cant install it from DOS. I went into Linux and it reads the 2K server CD rom but it wont run the setup.exe file.

Any help would be appreciated. Thx
